Types Of Cutting Wheel

The cutting wheels produced by our company mainly include the following types:

Type-1 Cutting Wheel

A type 1 or Type 41 is the most efficient flat cut-off wheel. It is commonly used for the general cutting of metals. Type-1 cutting wheels have a larger cutting surface and less interference with the workpiece because it doesn't have a depressed center. These wheels are utilized with angle grinders, die grinders, and chop saws (high-speed or stationary saws).

Type-27 Cut-Off Wheel

A type 27 or type 42 is a depressed center cut-off wheel. For tight or narrow cutting a depressed center provides more space but also restricts the cutting power of the wheel, especially around corners. Type 27 cut-off wheel is most suitable with the right-angle grinders.

Right Angle Cut-Off Wheel

The right angle cut-off wheel is a multi-purpose cutting wheel. These wheels are used to cut concrete, aluminum, steel, tile, stone, angle brackets, metal studs, and other general materials.

Depressed Center Wheel

A depressed center wheel is mainly utilized for smoothing welds, notching, beveling, cutting pipe, and stone materials.

Small Diameter Reinforced Wheel

Small diameter reinforced wheels are mainly used with angle grinders to cut small metal surfaces efficiently.

Circular Saw Reinforced Cut-Off Wheel

A circular saw reinforced wheel is used for almost all metal deburring. They are mainly utilized by the construction industries for cutting building materials.

Applications of Cutting Wheel

General Fabrication

In general metal fabrication, 0.045-inch wheel diameters are common choices. With thinner materials, an operator may want to choose a 1-millimeter wheel instead for greater precision, less heat generation, and fewer burrs that will require removal before welding.

Pipe Fabrication

In metal pipe fabrication, the choice of cutting wheel often depends on the diameter of the pipe to be cut. For a 3/4-inch or smaller pipe, a 4 1/2-inch diameter will usually be sufficient. For a pipe of up to 2 1/2 inches, a 6-inch cutting wheel is effective, and for a pipe of up to 3 1/2 inches, a 9-inch cutting wheel is often most suitable.

Shipbuilding

When an operator is working on the confined, hard-to-access spaces of a ship, making a cutting wheel last as long as possible is often a priority. For this reason, the operator will often want to choose a harder, potentially longer-lasting wheel.

Welding Preparation

Preparing for welding typically involves exact metal cutting. With a basic cut-off operation, precision is not critical, but with complex work or repairs that need to preserve the initial aesthetic qualities of the material, precision can save time and money.

Railways

Modern railways use hard-to-cut alloy steels, so a high-performance cutting wheel is necessary for high-speed gas saws. A self-sharpening zirconia alumina grain that retains a high cutting performance throughout the life of the wheel offers excellent performance.

Abrasive Grain Types for Cutting Wheels

Ceramic Alumina

Ceramic alumina may be a self-sharpening and funky cutting grain that cuts at lower temperatures and with less friction, reducing heat discoloration of the workpiece. Ceramic grains utilize a crystalline structure designed with many fracture points that self-sharpen at a better rate than other grains.

Zirconia Alumina

Zirconia alumina has self-sharpening crystals, the delay under extreme pressure. Zirconia alumina retains a high cut-rate throughout the life of the wheel, delivering exceptional performance.

Zirconia Alumina

Aluminum oxide may be a single crystal that gives an initial harp cut.

Silicon Carbide

Silicon carbide is an incredibly hard grain that's very sharp and fast cutting. It's also friable in comparison to other grains.

Machines Needed to Manufacture Cutting Wheels

01.

Double pots mixer: Machine adopts double pots to mix materials so that can make the mixture more evenly. And the pots and forks are rotate in different directions, which is good for mixing materials.

Vibrating sieve: It is easy to operate, after connect with power, it can be shake to separate the materials. It is used to separate the fine grains from mixture, and then these fine grains can be used for making cutting wheel after soaking some time.

Cutting wheel making machine: It is used to mold cutting wheel, and get the semi finished product. On this machine, feeding the fine grains mixture, adding fiberglass net, ring and label, then hydraulic press, after these main actions, get the semi-finish cutting wheel.

02.

Curing oven: Heating and hardening cutting wheel and grinding wheels. Put cutting wheel, aluminium plate, separating net in a proper order and quantity on bunching shaft, Arrange the bunching shaft on the trolley to send into oven. Heating them according to related heating curve.

Rotation strength test machine: Test the rotation speed of the cutting wheel is qualified or not.

Balance tester: Normally, bigger size of cutting wheel suggested to test the balance, like 12-16 inch cutting wheel. Balance testing machine is to test the unbalance points on the cutting wheel. It is impossible for all cutting wheel to be in absolute balance. As long as the cutting wheel in the range of data you set.

Auto packing machine: To pack the quality cutting wheel with film. We have different models for different sizes packing.

Precautions for Using Cutting Wheels

● Use proper protective equipment such as a PPE kit, safety glasses, face shield, gloves, and a dust mask.

● Before using cutting wheels, examine any damage or crack.

● Check cutting machine speed and do not exceed above maximum rotation speed.

● Install correct flanges on portable cut-off wheels.

● At the start, Run the wheel without any workpiece for a minute.

● Cover the machine wheels from both ends.

● Cut-off wheels are ideally used only for cutting purposes (not for grinding and deburring).

● Make 90 degrees angle between the workpiece and the cutting wheel.

● Keep body parts and clothing away from the cutting wheel.

● Do not use a damaged wheel guard, replace it with a new one as soon as possible.

● Use the right method of handling and storage of cut-off wheels.

● Read manual instructions before using cut-off wheels.

FAQ

Q: How to choose a cutting wheel?

A: If you only have one material to cut, find the wheel where your material's hardness is placed as close to the middle as possible. For two or more materials, see if you can find a wheel that covers the whole hardness range. The bars that fade out at the bottom represent wheels that can be used for lower hardness also.

Q: How does a cutting wheel work?

A: Cutting wheels (aka cut-off discs) are an abrasive tool used for fast cutting of materials like metal, concrete, and stone. Their portability allows the operator to move around freely with it and maneuver their tools from different angles to easily cut a material.

Q: What is the difference between type 1 and type 27 cutting wheels?

A: Type 1 grinding wheels are flat and used for a variety of grinding and cutting tasks on flat surfaces, edges, and angles. Type 27 grinding wheels have a saucer shape with a depressed center, making them ideal for grinding and cutting on contoured surfaces and hard-to-reach areas.

Q: How should cutting wheels be stacked?

A: Thin organic bonded wheels, such as those used for cutting off, should be laid flat on a flat steel surface or similarly rigid material away from excessive heat, moisture, and other liquids to prevent warpage. Loose blotters should not be placed between stacked thin wheels.

Q: Do cutting wheels expire?

A: All good quality discs will have an expiry date stamped on them somewhere. This is usually found on the central metal ring or on the disc itself. Occasionally it will be on a label attached to the disc. It is important to note that this is a “use by” date that should never be exceeded.

Q: What type of force on a cutting wheel can cause it to shatter?

A: Jamming or feeding the work into the wheel too fast will cause excessive strain on the wheel and may result in wheel breakage, particularly with machines which feed the wheel into the work hydraulically.
