Types of Superhard Abrasives

01.

Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN)

The same team that made synthetic diamonds created Cubic Boron Nitride or CBN. Similar to diamond making, CBN goes through a process called sintering. CBN has similar properties to diamond but with superior thermal and chemical stability, making it more suitable to cut super-hardened steel and metals.

02.

Diamond

Professionals can use diamond as a cutting tool to cut non-metallic materials such as granite, gorilla glass, concrete, and ceramic tiles. For example, diamond coated jigsaw blades can cut precision holes in granite for sink hardware. The strength and precision of the blade make it ideal for creating precise features. Used in a CNC milling machine, a diamond-tipped contour tool cuts the slots and grooves in gorilla glass on smartphones as well. Diamond’s properties make it ideal for close tolerance and cutting and grinding with precision.

Advantages of Superhard Abrasives

Superior Surface Finishing

In surface finishing applications, superhard abrasive stands out due to its high abrasion resistance. It imparts a smooth, polished finish to a variety of materials, enhancing their aesthetic appeal and functional performance.

Exceptional Cutting Capabilities

Superhard abrasive’s exceptional hardness allows it to cut through materials with high precision. It is commonly used in water jet cutting and other applications where precision and speed are paramount.

Enhanced Grinding Efficiency

In grinding operations, superhard abrasive’s superior hardness and thermal stability enable it to maintain sharp cutting edges, leading to improved grinding efficiency and reduced tool wear.

Applications of Superhard Abrasives

While the list of industries that use superabrasives is extensive. There are a few industries that are known for being heavy users.

● Oil industry

● Medical

● Aerospace

● Composites

● Automotive

● Electronics

These industries typically manufacture with delicate materials like silicone or very hard materials like metals.

Chemical Properties of Superhard Abrasives

Oxidation resistance

When superhard abrasive is heated to 1300°C in air, a protective layer of silicon dioxide begins to form on the surface of its superhard abrasive crystals. As the protective layer thickens, it prevents the internal superhard abrasive from continuing to be oxidized, which makes superhard abrasive have better oxidation resistance. When the temperature reaches 1900K (1627℃) or higher, the silica protective film begins to be destroyed and the oxidation of the superhard abrasive intensifies, so 1900K is the maximum working temperature of superhard abrasive in an oxidizer-containing atmosphere.

Acid and alkali resistance

In terms of resistance to acids, alkalis and oxides, superhard abrasive is highly resistant to acids and alkalis due to the role of silica protective film.

Physical and Mechanical Properties of Superhard Abrasives

Density

The particle density of various superhard abrasive crystalline forms is very close, generally considered to be 3.20 g/m³, and the natural bulk density of its superhard abrasive abrasives is between 1.2 – 1.6 g/m³, the height of which depends on the particle size number, particle size composition and particle shape.

Hardness

The Mohs hardness of superhard abrasive is 9.2, the Weiss microdensity hardness is 3000–3300 kg/m³, the Nuptial hardness is 2670-2815 kg/mm, which is higher than corundum and second only to diamond, cubic boron nitride and boron carbide in abrasives, and its wear resistance is more than ten times that of alloy just and wear-resistant cast iron.

Thermal conductivity

The thermal conductivity of superhard abrasive products is very high, the thermal conductivity of more than 12, the coefficient of thermal expansion is small, high thermal shock resistance, is a high-quality refractory materials.

Superhard Abrasives Notes

● Feeding environment as far as possible for sealed, so that it is not easy to fall into large particles with the air flow.

● Rotten packaging of superhard abrasive micro powder as far as possible not to use, rotten packaging may have been mixed with impurities, affecting the cutting effect.

● The use of slurry should control the use of tools to prevent cross-use pollution.

● Ready to throw the material slurry to avoid storage for too long, if too long will produce united matter, but also the formation of false particles, may bring to the line cutting.

FAQ

Q: What is superhard abrasive?

A: Superhard abrasive refers to abrasives with extremely high hardness, usually used to process materials with higher hardness. Common superhard abrasives include diamond and cubic boron nitride (CBN).

Q: What are the similarities and differences between cubic boron nitride (CBN) abrasives and diamond abrasives?

A: Cubic boron nitride (CBN) abrasives and diamond abrasives are similar in hardness, but the hardness and wear resistance of CBN are slightly inferior to diamond. In addition, CBN has higher thermal stability and chemical inertness, and is not easy to react chemically with iron group metals at high temperatures, so it is more suitable for processing iron-containing materials.

Q: How to choose the right super-hard abrasive tool?

A: Choosing the right super-hard abrasive tool requires considering factors such as workpiece material, processing accuracy, surface roughness requirements, and processing cost. For example, when processing materials with higher hardness, diamond abrasives with higher hardness should be used; while when processing iron-containing materials, CBN abrasives are more suitable.

Q: How to keep the super-hard abrasive sharp during use?

A: During use, the sharpness of super-hard abrasives can be maintained by properly selecting abrasives and grinding tools, controlling grinding parameters, keeping the grinding fluid clean, and regularly dressing the grinding tools. In addition, the use of advanced grinding technology and equipment can also effectively improve the sharpness and service life of abrasives.

Q: What are the advantages of boron carbide?

A: Its outstanding hardness makes it a suitable abrasive powder for lapping, polishing and water jet cutting of metals and ceramics. The combination of low specific weight, high hardness and reasonable toughness makes it a suitable material for body and vehicle armor.
